Review of H.P. Lovecraft Omnibus 1: At The Mountains of Madness and Other Novels of Terror
This collection of seven tales by H.P. Lovecraft, the master of the short horror story, has a good balance of stories from his dream cycle as well as the cthulhu mythos stories which he is most famous for.
It starts off with the eponymous 'At The Mountains of Madness', which is a classic cthulhu tale about a man driven to madness by an ancient evil discovered deep underground by an arhaeological team digging in the antarctic. The 'Necrinomicon', which all Lovecraft readers will be familiar with, makes it's appearance in the occult horror of 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward'. 'Dreams in the Witch House' explores another familiar motif - the idea of dangerous knowledge and the connection between higher maths and occult forces. 'The Statement of Randolph Carter' is a very short 10 page story with a twist in it's tail, and the book then moves into Lovecraft's dream cycle of stories exploring the same dream world which he returns to again and again in his writing with 'The Silver Key' and 'Through The Gates Of The Silver Key'. If you like horror books then you absolutely have to read Lovecraft, and this does provide a good introduction to the dark universe of his imagination.
